What is Za’atar?

Za’atar is a herb and spice mix of thyme, toasted sesame seeds, sumac and other spices that is commonly consumed with bread and olive oil in the Middle Eastern region.

The recipe can vary greatly based on the specific region and household, and can closely resemble another Middle Eastern spice mix, ‘dukka’.

In Palestine, for example, a spice mix called ‘dukka’ resembles to the syrian ‘Aleppo za’atar’ with earthy spices and nuts mixed in.

What are some ways to use a za’atar condiment?

Want to add flavour to your morning eggs or egg substitute? Simply mix the content of the jar and pour some over your plate for all the flavour you need 😉

Is it lunch time? Drizzle it on your green salad, on an avocado toast, or dip your falafel balls in it!

Time to whisk up a side for dinner? Coat some chopped potatoes, carrots and cauliflower with it and roast for 45 min!

Receiving friends over? Pour some over a bowl of Greek yoghurt and cut up some fresh bread and vegetables to use as a dip!

Feeling creative? Add some to your cookie dough for that secret sweet-and-savoury ingredient everyone will ask about!

Where does za’atar originate from?

Za’atar as a spice mix originates in the Middle Eastern region, specifically in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Palestine.
